NCTVA awards winners of the TVET Coalition photo competition

Introduction

The National Council for Technical Vocational and other Academic Awards (NCTVA) alongside with the TVET Coalition organized the World Youth Skills Days with a photo competition as part of its activities on July 15, 2019. The judging of the photo competition was done by the sponsors who succeeded to select three winners out of the 27 or more that participated in the competition. Alusine Caleb, an engineering student of Fourah Bay College received the first prize. The second prize was won by Peter Alusine Koroma who is a student of Makeni Vocational Training Centre studying Information Technology. The third prize was won by John Njiala Sesay of FLS Academy.

In that vein, on the 13th of December 2019, a ceremony was organized at NCTVA’s Conference Hall to hand over the prizes to the three successful winners.

Prices

UNDP supported the competition through a donation of SLL 15, 000,000.00 (Fifteen Million Leones) which was used for:

  • The SLL 7, 000, 000.00 Leones scholarship for the competition winner.
  • Purchasing of the:
    • Laptop for the 1st prize winner at cost of SLL 4, 800, 000.00
    • Huawei Tablet for the 2nd prize winner at cost of SLL 2, 200, 000.00
    • Techno smart phone for the 3rd prize winner at cost of SLL 1, 000, 000.00

AfriGas supported through a donation of SLL 5, 000,000.00 (Five Million Leones), which was won by Peter Alusine Koroma from Makeni as the 2nd prize winner.

Limkokwing supported through a donation of SLL 3, 000,000.00 (Three Million Leones), which was won by John Njiala Sesay as the 3rd prize winner.

Sierra Leone Brewery will be providing 3 months internships to the three winners.

Opening Remarks

The program was called to order at 10:40 a.m. by Ing. Alhaji Mohamed Ali Jalloh, Director of NCTVA which was followed by individual silent prayers. Mr. Mansaray, the Administrative Officer of NCTVA, welcomed the participants to the venue. In his welcoming speech, he explained about how the activities were organized by the TVET Coalition alongside with NCTVA during the WYSD. Mr. Mansaray expressed his deep gratitude for the attendance of an important event like this.

Statement from the Chairman

Ali Muhammad, representative and technical advisor of GIZ-TVET, was asked to chair and moderate the program. In his statement he briefly explained how the Coalition has celebrated the WYSD on July 15 and how this photo competition was part of the main activities which were concluded by distributing the prizes to the winners of the competition. He called upon Fullah Musu Conteh to hand over the prizes to the winners of the competition.

Statement from Fulla Musu Conteh

In her presentation, she informed the audience that the judging was done by the sponsors – Africell, Afrigas and Linkokwing who determined the first three winners. Furthermore, she revealed the prize for each winner. The first person won a computer and seven million Leones, the second person won an iPad and five million Leones, while the third winner won three million Leones.

Statement from the winners

Caleb Kamara and Peter Alusine thanked the TVET Coalition and NCTVA. They expressed their gratitude by reminding the attendees  that these kind of events would help to showcase the existing talents among the Sierra Leone youth.

Conclusion

Fulla Musu Conteh thanked all the sponsors for making the program a success. She appreciated the presenters who took various parts at the launching of the Communication Platform during the WYSD. She thanked the TVET Coalition and all participants.
